A contemporary-design apartment, in the centre of Catania.

Uflat is the apartment you don’t expect, set inside an elegant early-1900s building and completely renovated to embrace the language of contemporary design. The project, curated by French architect Nadir Guemida, reinterpreted the spaces with sensitivity and respect, preserving the harmonious proportions and generous volumes of the original architecture.

The spaces flow into one another with natural continuity, accompanied by a single oak floor that runs through the whole apartment, joining its rooms in a coherent, essential dialogue.

Above, the vaulted ceilings remain the protagonists, along with the historic cementine tiles, recovered and repositioned as vertical decorative elements, and the delicately whitened stuccos, which help create an intimate, enveloping atmosphere. The white walls become a neutral canvas against which the materials emerge: the warmth of wood, the transparency of glass, the elegance of steel and the character of iron.

Natural light crosses the rooms through two large windows facing the street, three openings looking onto the inner courtyard and a further window leading to the terrace. As evening falls, a carefully designed lighting scheme enhances the spaces and brings out their architectural details.

Four bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, designed to offer comfort and privacy. Essential objects and artisan craftsmanship, chosen with care, complete the rooms: small details that hold unexpected stories and make every stay an authentic experience.

  • The location was just excellent, minutes from Via Etnea and the Bellini Gardens. The best part for me was the view of Etna from the terrace — you could see smoke from the crater by day and magma at night, what a sight! Aurelio couldn’t have been a better host.
